Using Dvorak with the Microsoft IME for Japanese (or any other language I'd assume)

August 15th, 2006 (10:00 pm)
current song: Mr.T - [beatmania IIDX 10thstyle OriginalSoundTrack (Disc 2)

I figured out a way to do this, I guess others may find it useful as well.

Open up regedit, and go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layouts". Inside this key there are multiple other keys with 32-bit hexadecimal values. Notice that "00010409" is "United States-Dvorak", and "00000409" is "US". "00000411" is Japanese. I changed the "Layout File" there to "KBDDV.DLL", as well as the "Layout File" under "E0010411", "Japanese Input System (MS-IME2002)", and now kana input is recognized in dvorak rather than default QWERTY mapping! :)

EDIT: Be warned that this may break たていすかん-style Japanese input (what you get if you click Kana, usually). I can't seem to get it to work, anyway. But if you want to use Dvorak under the IME, I guess you're probably not interested in たていすかん入力 anyway.

why not just change the layout from the regional and language settings panel

it's not hard or anything

explain how to do this since I don't see an option ANYWHERE (note: this is to change the layout underneath the Japanese IME, not just in English Language mode)

You are my hero. BTW in Vista you do not need to change the layout file under "E0010411", "Japanese Input System (MS-IME2002)"

No problem :) If you want to publicize this better, you could always link to it somewhere. Google will pick it up.
